The window was open and the curtains were drawn, letting in the setting sun’s orange glow. It would be a while yet before it sank below the horizon. The sound of vehicles could be heard, accompanied by people chattering as they passed by the building. It was one of many on that street, converted from their states as grand old homes into drafty apartments rented to university students.
Classes had started only a few days ago. Now, on the first Friday night of the school year, Snorri readied himself to go out, and ignored the familiar sound of someone calling his older brother’s name from down in the parking lot.
“Erik! Hey, Erik, where the hell are ya’? Hurry up!”
They were late. Snorri sighed. He had been told “Just a minute” for every five minutes for half an hour, and he was getting impatient. He checked himself in the mirror for the tenth time that evening, then headed down the hall to his brother’s bedroom. He leaned against the doorjamb and watched him for a moment.
“Why are you wearing that?” he asked. “It’s so...”
Erik turned to look at him, raising an eyebrow. They had been over the matter of his old sweater more than once. “It’s comfortable; that’s final. Besides, we’re just going out for beer. Not exactly a night out at the Tempest. I’m not about to get overdressed for this – unlike you.” He turned back to the mirror and resumed trying to smooth out the curly bit of hair at the back of his head, lips pursing a bit. “Think you should go down and tell Lars to just wait. I can hear him all the way up here.” A pause. “Tell him if he doesn’t shut up I’ll rip out his liver and feed it to him.”
