The foyer was too damn bright. With the dark of the early evening outside, the glass reflected everything back, made the entranceway seem like it was full of mirrors, or maybe like it was a fishbowl. Made him feel exposed. Anyone could be out there.
Mailbox. Keys. Click, clink, the lock turning.
Junk. Just junk again, and a shitload of bills. Jacques frowned as he flipped through the lot, then shoved the door shut with a heavy sigh. Locked it. The usual.
Sound of someone coming down the stairs. Slow steps, as if the person stepping was thinking every step through. He glanced toward the sound, tried see enough in the corner of his eye to determine if it was one of the normal ones or one of those creepy shits, the kind he tried to avoid.
No. Just that one, the one from next door. What's his name. The Russian or whatever.
Not a creep. Jacques had determined that not long after that one had moved in. Just looked like a creep. Walked with hunched shoulders, hands in his pockets, thin-faced, circles under his eyes making him look like a fucking raccoon, like he hadn't had a proper night's sleep in months. Didn't come out in the day much. But he hadn't made any trouble, no. Weird, but kept to himself.
That suited Jacques just fine.
He remembered the first time they spoke. Well, the only time. And not even a conversation. They'd crossed paths in the hallway, just a normal thing. Jacques had said "Hi", like you do, and the guy nearly jumped out of his skin. Startled as hell. Looked like he wanted to run.
So fucking weird.
