Bridges
A bright evening, a breeze blowing just slightly. Perfect – and Canada had expected this. He had taken Ukraine down to the river, headed down to the Broadway bridge, snuck down onto the rocks covering the bank’s slope, large and round and scrawled with colourful graffiti. Set down beach towels and settled to watch the sun sank beneath the river, listening to folk music blare from the band stand across the bank. Clink of glass soda bottles as they made a toast to the day, to one another.
He had not expected her sliding closer to him, no. Nor had he expected her hand on his hand, squeezing it gently, Ukraine smiling at him, saying thank you. Oh this is so nice, isn’t it, I’m so glad you thought of it.
And Canada found he couldn’t do anything more than stutter out acknowledgement, his ears turning red and redder and redder while she just smiled and smiled and smiled.
