Black and white
A match sputtered.
The light glinted off Sweden's glasses as he lit one candle, then another. He handed the first to Norway, who proceeded to do the same.
Soon the room was filled with soft, warm, flickering light.
There was no need to say "Well, looks like the power is out." The both of them could see it. There was no need to say "I wonder how long it will be?" With the blizzard outside, it was certain to be quite a while before it came back on.
With the two of them, there was no need for idle chatter; they simply set about making things as right as could be in a slow, comfortable quiet.
"Firewood's by th'door." Norway paused in his candle-lighting and looked at Sweden, who nodded and set to. There was only one question, and that was what they should do. It was not really a question at all. Such a night was not unknown to the two of them. Having made up his mind, Norway went to the bookcase and took down the familiar slim wooden box from the top shelf.
Soon the glow was brighter, more rosy, the dry wood cracking, while outside the wind roared and the snow fell heavily, making icy pattering sounds against the windows.
Cross-legged on the floor, thick blankets around their shoulders, they sat a while close by that warm light, a chessboard between them. Quiet concentration and the occasional click of wood against wood as pieces were set down.
It didn't matter how long they would be in the dark. It was enough to have one another for company.
