Not so mysterious

Though the meeting was dull, Norway should have known better than to look over Iceland’s shoulder and ask what he was writing – because what he was hurriedly scribbling down certainly didn’t look like notes. The look of surprise and Iceland hurriedly covering the sheet of paper wasn’t entirely unexpected; what was unexpected was the kick that Iceland gave him under the table – and not lightly, either. He was absolutely insistent about it.

Well, then. What’s so important that you don’t want me to see it? Norway wrote on his own sheet of paper before sliding it over to Iceland, who gave it a look, turned up his nose a bit, and then moved his arm over the page so that Norway certainly wouldn’t be able to see it. Whatever it was.

When next Iceland looked at him, Norway arched an eyebrow, then leaned in to mutter to him. “A love letter, is it?” Because Iceland certainly was acting foolish, like a teenager who’d been caught writing love notes during class, and the way he flushed scarlet at the words didn’t give a better impression, either.

The comment earned Norway a half-hearted kick to the foot, which he readily returned before deciding to let things be. If Iceland was going to be secretive, he’d leave him alone – for the moment. He wouldn’t be able to escape the teasing later, however.

When Norway received a letter in the mail two weeks later, with neither name nor return address on it, he thought nothing of it to begin with. But as he read it, his eyebrows arched, first one, and then the other. Oh. So that was why Iceland hadn’t wanted him to see it. It had been exactly as he thought.

A few days after that, Iceland received an unmarked letter in the mail. He opened it where he stood at the mailbox, skimmed it, turned red, then read it over again. It said simply:

Leaving off the return address is a start. But if you’re going to send anonymous love letters, don’t forget to type them. Your handwriting is very distinct. It ruins the mystery.

End.
