Ifs, Ands, and Buts

Norway had his nose out of joint.

As far as Denmark was concerned, it wasn't his fault! Sure, every now and then when things went wrong - well, maybe more than that, but who's counting? - it was his fault. He'd admit to it, yes sir! But this time, it didn't have a damn thing to do with him, and there was no reason for his best buddy to go around acting like he was hard done by. Spending the summer together in order to keep Denmark occupied had not been his idea - even if it was so great that he wished that he'd thought of it himself.

Unfortunately, Norway didn't seem to see it the same way, and convincing him to relax a little and smile for once was, for some reason, a lot harder than usual.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time! March right into Norway's room, get his nose out of that book, and invite him outside. Sure, they would be spending the whole summer together and there was plenty of time for all that, but what better time than the present to start having a good time?

It was a great idea! The best one he'd had in a while! It was...

... not going the way Denmark had hoped.

"Now see here," Norway said, giving Denmark's ear a firm twist to go along with the pulling he was already doing. "I ain't keen on bein' stuck with you all summer, and I don't want you interrupting my business, neither."

"But it ain't so bad - ow!"

Norway gave him a murderous look, but then thankfully let go in favour of taking up his book again.

Denmark's hand instantly went to his ear, covering it to protect it from any more surprise Norwegian assaults. Geeze, he thought as he pouted at his friend. Talk about heavy-handed. "You'd really rather not be here, huh."

"In your capital, with the likes of you? 'course not." Norway frowned into his book, not looking up. "It's only on account've your king askin' it that I'm here, understand."

"He's your king too, y'know."

"An' that's why I agreed to it." Norway turned the page, frowned, and pointedly didn't look up.

Denmark sighed. Walked over to the window. Looked out and tried to think. It was true that his friend wasn't exactly what you'd call sweet-tempered, even on the best of days, but ever since he'd arrived he'd been acting like he'd eaten raw nettles for breakfast.

"Are you still mad about the taxes?" Denmark asked. He waited. From behind him came the sound of another page flipping, and then Norway's reply.

"No."

He waited. Nothing else. Damn. "Ya' sure?"

More angry page-flipping. Was he even reading that thing? When it finally stopped, Norway's voice was quieter than before, not quite as sharp.

"I ain't mad about the taxes."

Well. That was good, at least. The last thing that they needed was for Norway to be pissed off about that. Not that Denmark could blame him if he was; the war was over, but it had made a mess of both of them.

But if that wasn't what he was angry about, what was it? Denmark bit the inside of his cheek. Traced the woodgrain on the window sill with his finger and tried to figure it out. No luck. Well.

He took a deep breath. "So, what is eatin' ya, then?"

Then he waited. There was no answer from Norway, but that didn't mean there wasn't one coming. Denmark chewed at his lip to keep himself from talking and didn't turn around. He could guess at how Norway looked, though; probably staring down at his book with that purse-lipped, narrow-eyed expression he got now and then. That sour look he had whenever Denmark asked a stupid question and Norway wasn't sure whether to give a straight answer.

From behind him came the sound of a book closing. "Rather spend the warm months up at my own place. Seein's I don't get that many."

"That's all?" The words popped out of Denmark's mouth before he could stop them, but that didn't matter, and the glare Norway gave him when Denmark whirled around and grinned at him didn't matter either. "Fine! Don't you worry. Can take care've that!"

"Can you, now."

Norway wasn't convinced, and that didn't matter either. Denmark marched right over to him and clapped a hand on his shoulder. "Sure! Frederick just wants ya t'keep me out've his hair for a while. Could do that just as good in Christiania as here!"

"But-"

"Been a while since I stayed at your place. It'll be great!"

"But-"

"I'll tell 'im right now!"

Before Norway could give him another "But", Denmark was out the door and down the hall, grinning from ear to ear as he went.

It was a great idea! He was glad he'd thought of it!

Sure, Nor might have had some buts, and some ands, and probably some ifs, but that didn't matter! Denmark was sure -- he'd thank him for it later.

Probably.
