Autumn Snow
The air was cold and damp. Overnight, there had been rain that wanted to be snow that wanted to be rain, lazily drizzling down from a sky so thick with clouds that the stars couldn't be seen not even out in the country. It left the streets slick, the gutters choked with wet brown leaves.
But in spite of the cold and the rain, it was nice.
"Goin' to snow," Norway muttered to Netherlands as they made their way up the road to his home. Behind them, the village rested in the damp, anticipating the next round of misty rain. Already, the buildings glowed with small, warm pinpoints of light. The sky was beginning to get dark.
"This soon?" Netherlands tilted his head upward, scrutinizing the sky as if he couldn't believe it.
"It won't stay." Stepping closer, Norway linked his warm with Netherlands' and held back a smile at the look of surprise he saw as he glanced to him. "It'll stay the night, but be gone come morn. 'S how it is. But it'll be back soon enough. ... 'S like someone I know, like that."
"Hmm." There was a long pause. "You're comparing me to snow."
"I might be."
Another pause as Netherlands considered it. "I'm not going to come over in December and stay until spring," he muttered. "If that's what you're asking."
At that, Norway gave him a nudge. "Not on your life. I'd get sick've you in a week. Be autumn snow, 's what I'm saying."
"Stay the night 'n leave."
"And then come right back."
They both fell quiet for a while. Silence. Nothing but the calls of the birds in the trees and the sound of dead leaves crunching under their feet. Finally, Netherlands nodded.
"I can live with that."
At that, Norway smiled. He didn't say anything; he didn't have to. That would do.
