Autumn Apples
It was a crisp autumn day. Not too warm, but not too cold either, as long as you remembered to wear long sleeves. The frost hadn't come yet, but Norway wasn't willing to chance it by waiting that much longer. "Best to get things done while it's still warm," he told Denmark. "I'm not about to go mucking around with yardwork after it snows."
That was how they both found themselves in Norway's backyard one afternoon, stepladders up against an old tree, picking apples.
"What y'you even do with all these?" Denmark asked as he reached for another, right at the top. "Your freezer can't hold that many pies."
"Just where d'you think that apple jelly I give you every year comes from?"
"... Oh."
"Anyhow, I ain't about to just leave 'em in the tree. The last thing I need is some moose wanderin' in here and getting drunk on fermented apples."
Denmark laughed. "Like that one that got stuck in Sweden's tree last year?"
"Exactly that. Now, hand me that there basked and get back to it, you. It'll be a while before we're done with this yet."
They worked at it until the sky began to darken - and even a while after that, as the sun started to sink damn early, what with how far north Norway's place was. And all the while, Denmark talked, and Norway fell into that usual sort of quiet that suggested he wasn't really listening. But that was fine, because it meant there would be apple jelly at Christmas, and apple cider too, and not a moose in sight.
