In the dark

Even when they look quiet, old houses rarely stand completely still. The human occupants might be gone, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything happening there at all. There is always the rush of tiny feet as rodents scamper about their business. The rustling of dead leaves stirred by drafts. The groan of the very structure as old wood settles in on itself. Rabbits and squirrels might make their home there. Owls might make their way in, and roost cozily in the attic's beams while waiting for the sun to go down. And sometimes, there might be other things.

Norway closed his eyes and breathed in the familiar scent of damp and decay. Dust, wet leaves, and mice. But there was something else. "Y'said this place was haunted," he muttered, opening his eyes slowly.

"That isn't what I said at all." Beside him, Estonia rummaged through his messenger bag and pulled out a pair of flashlights. "What I said was that there have been rumours of supernatural activity."

"Wasn't aware you were into this kind've thing."

"I'm not," Estonia replied as he handed one of the flashlights to Norway. "In fact, I don't think we'll find anything, which is for the better. The stories will be useful, though."

"Hmm." Norway said nothing as he turned on the flashlight and scanned its pale beam along the floor. There were signs of footsteps, but they were dusted over; nobody had been there for some time. Nobody human, at least. "... Hold on. What d'you mean, 'useful'?"

"Tourism," Estonia said crisply. "Clean it up, make it sound, and then we'd have a genuine haunted house." He gave a smile which, though wide, was hardly visible in the dim light.

Norway stared at him, then turned his gaze back toward the room. As he stepped forward, sweeping the beam of his flashlight across the floor, he could feel the hair prick at the back of his neck, and scent something beneath the decay of wood and leaves. Something dark and quiet, something not quite alive. They could investigate all they liked, he thought, but he'd have to break the news to him. Gently.

The rumours were more genuine than Estonia thought.
