Sweet Cola

You're the click of metal on glass
fizzing bubbles on my tongue
sweet cola going down easy.
Rather you didn't set up over here
wasn't me who opened the door
but it could be worse.

I can see on your face
a look I've rarely known
new nation full of energy
thinks he can touch the stars.
It's so cocky of you
but I'll keep my thoughts to myself.

My people are sturdy
on this rock a thousand years
when they came here they thought
it looked like the end of the earth.
In this place that looks like hell
they can weather a regular gale.

But the storm in the east is a plague spreading
and wolves are circling my rocky shore
and eagles roost in my brother's home
building their nests in the lion's den.
Now here's an eagle from the west
saying he'll save the day, but we'll see.

So here you are with your Hollywood smile
full of teeth bright as bleached whalebone
and my women whisper about your men
with their nice hair and neat-trimmed nails
bubblegum and cola and cigarettes.
You look so good in your uniform.

You say my name's easy to remember
I think if it wasn't you'd forget it
but when you smile and hand me a bottle
carefree and calling me "pal"
I wonder if I'm being too pessimistic.
It'll do no good to get attached.

I won't say a thing.
I'll just be your rock
a place to stop on the way to the storm
I'll be your harbour
and your aircraft carrier.
For my own sake, I won't say a thing.
