Title: Easy as colour
Fandom: Original characters
Characters/Pairing: Jacques/Yuriy
Rating: E for Everyone
Length: 250 words
Summary: That's the thing. You have to be patient.
Other: Talimee challenged me to write something about watching paint dry. ;p I decided to go with original stuff for this one....
I plan to write more things with these guys eventually, but I think I'll need to do some warmup bits like this one first.

Easy as colour

One wash of colour. Wait.

Another wash of colour. Wait.

That's the problem with paint, Jacques thought as he rinsed his brush, glancing at the canvas as if staring at it would make it dry faster. There was so much waiting.

Splashes of diluted acrylic, watercolour-like, the layer taking its time to dry down. He sat back in his chair. Closed his eyes for a moment. Felt the afternoon sunlight on his face.

The window was open, letting in the sounds from the street below. People walking. Birds. In a nearby rowhouse, someone was playing a piano, the song floating lightly upward.

He could hear Yuriy talking in the other room, his voice low-toned and gentle, rolling over the rough syllables as he spoke to whichever relative it was that he had on the videochat this time. Jacques listened. Couldn't understand a word. What little Russian he'd picked up from his brief attempts hadn't been enough, and hardly any of it had managed to stick, anyway.

But the sound was nice.

He reached for his brush.

Wash. Wait. Wash. Wait. Jacques dipped his head, listening, trying to catch a word between the sound of piano notes, the rustle of leaves outside the house, his boyfriend's voice in the next room. The click of his brush against the water jar kept time with the song, with the rhythm of Yuriy's murmuring.

He'd catch those words some day. Understand them. Speak them, too, some day.

It was only a matter of waiting.

Hiya!

Talimee here. Man, I'm glad I challened you to this! It is wonderful in tone and setting. So calming, so summer-y. :)

I love it!

P.S. When did I issue that challenge? Was I drunk? :D

Thank you! <3

It was during Iceland's football match yesterday, so you might have been drunk, though of course I cannot confirm for sure. ;p

Drunk on endorphins and excessive chatting, perhaps. XD

Anyhow, even more impressive that you managed to throw this together in less than a day, complete with OCs and everything. Awesome!

Tal~

These two are some a storyline that I've been meaning to write for a while, so it was just a matter of finding a scene to put them in. :D To be honest, I'm quite grateful for your accidental prompt, because I needed the nudge. xD

Ooh, I can relate to this so much. I've spent many a long afternoon waiting for paint to dry (or fixing mistakes that happened because I was too impatient to wait). And the surrounding sounds that trickle in do a great job of setting the rest of the scene. (How do you manage to give so much information in so few words? HOW!?!?!?)

Heee, yeah. It's been years since I painted anything, but I still remember That Feeling. (Do you ever throw up your hands and reach for the hairdryer to speed things along, or is that just me? ;p )

As for managing lots of information in few words: Read poetry. Then take what poetry does and apply to prose according to taste. :D

Haha, I probably would go for a hairdryer if I had one handy, but it would require going upstairs and digging around in my housemates' bathroom to figure out where one was (I think at least one of them owns one.) So instead I usually end up either working on multiple paintings at once, or taking breaks to poke around on the internet.

Oh, right...poetry. *crawls out from under giant mountain of prose* That's...a thing. (Seriously though, I do enjoy poetry, I'm just bad at making deliberate efforts to read it.)
