Indirect Conversation

Conversation with Sweden was always better when he didn’t look directly at you, Estonia reasoned. It was not only because of his intense stare, which could be very unnerving at times. It was also because somehow, it was easier for him to speak that way, as if arranging his thoughts in order to think of the right thing to say came more naturally that way. Regardless of the cause, Estonia found that he didn’t mind it at all.

Out on Sweden’s patio, the evening air was pleasantly cool, with the day’s light gradually fading a little, but still staying strong, not about to give up its summer presence just yet, even if the days were slowly getting shorter. A cup of coffee in his hands, Estonia listened to the low rumbling of Sweden’s voice as he spoke of the day, and of the coming autumn - “‘S startin’ t’get cold, y’feel it, don’t ya’” - and of family, and friends, and plans for visiting. As he spoke, Sweden directed his attention to the pots of flowers on the patio, going over them carefully, removing the spent blossoms. There was still some time left in those plants yet.

“You should visit soon,” Estonia said, setting his mug on the patio table.

“Oh?”

Sweden glanced at him, looking at him over the edge of his glasses before dropping his gaze again to pinch off another stubborn seed pod.

“Yes. I, ah…” That one look had been enough to make him lose his train of thought. Grasping at what remained of it, Estonia decided to follow Sweden’s lead.

The dry blossoms crunched under his fingertips as he plucked them off, carefully pinching beneath the head. Somehow, giving his hands something to do made the words come more easily.

“A personal visit, I mean, if you do have the time for it. It’s been a while since you were last in Tallinn, and the weather won’t be good for much longer.”

Sweden grunted an acknowledgment. “The two’ve us?”

“Yes.” Estonia plucked off another head and, emboldened by the question, added, “I like your company.” Because it was true, even if the silences were at times awkward, even with the difficulty of accurately perceiving what Sweden was thinking at any given moment.

Estonia heard the sound of movement as Sweden stood, then felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. He lifted his head to see Sweden looking down at him. It might have been a trick of the early morning sunlight, but he seemed to be smiling.

“I’ll get ya’ s’more coffee,” Sweden said warmly, then took up Estonia’s mug and stepped indoors.

That, it seemed, was his way of saying ‘Yes’. Estonia looked out at the golden evening sunlight and smiled. It might not have been direct, but it suited him well.

End.
