Like sunlight on the lake
The air smells different this far from the coast.
It feels different, too; brighter and clearer. And the summer days are long, long, longer, too long. It's a little bit unnerving when he thinks about it too much.
They're so far from everything that the land feels still and quiet in a way that he's no longer used to hearing. It's the stillness of something resting, breathing slowly, with one eye open.
It's been a few days since they last saw a human being. That's how it is in the middle of nowhere. There aren't many roads. And there isn't any wifi. Or cell service at all, actually. Not this far out. Not where they are.
Hiking? And camping? Out in the wilderness?
Whose idea was this again?
Oh. Right. Of course. That one, right beside him, with his hair mussed from the wind, a bright and cheered expression on his face. These are his borders. This is his head and shoulders.
With company like this, well, maybe Estonia can admit that he doesn't mind it.
The lakewater is cool on their feet. Tomorrow, they'll move again. Or the next day. But it's nice to stay a little while.
Fireweed crowds the water's edge, looking as if it might jump in.
His camera doesn't have much charge left, but it's enough to take a picture. The sunlight glares on the lake, sparkling, too bright.
All that's left of the foreground is Finland's dark silhouette waving for Estonia to join him.
