Night Watch
Gone are the quiet gray days,
rain against the window
scent of bread wafting
through the kitchen
and the kids complaining about
whatever comes to mind.
The village is quiet.
The store is locked
shut up tight
a handwritten sign saying
"Closed until further notice"
and further notice won't ever come.
They don't complain any more
only ask in hushed voices
"When can we go home?"
He doesn't have an answer,
and doesn't offer one
only wraps them in a ragged quilt
and keeps both eyes open
watching for monsters worse than anything
that ever lurked under their beds.
