Skerry
What is it that has pulled me out
into this salty morning air?
Is it someone calling,
making demands, interrupting me
as if they have the right?
No –
it's you, passing me the spyglass
iron hair whipping around your face
loosened from its coil.
We're almost there
you say, gesturing
and I follow your hand
to the dark splotch on the horizon.
We'll rest comfortably tonight
settle ourselves down for a while
get a second wind
before heading on.
It's bound to be quite a cove
the most miserable fish post
you ever did see
and I wager you've seen a lot of them.
But after chasing me for years
like Ahab and his whale
you aren't about to let go, are you.
You'll follow me to every port
cleaving to me
the sea under my bow
a wave on my rocky shore.
