Title: A nod and her favour
Fandom: Stand Still Stay Silent
Characters/Pairing: Mari & Vesa; references to Vesa/Suvi and Jussi/Láilá
Rating: 0+
Length: 76 lines poetry
Summary: Mari wants to have a word with her new son-in-law.
Other: The Kajaani OCs again. I feel that Mari would have some mixed feelings about Vesa - he definitely wouldn't be an ideal pick, but the reasons for that don't necessarily have to do with Vesa himself. I wanted to explore her eventual (and somewhat grudging) acceptance of him.

A nod and her favour

Rouse yourself, son-in-law,
you're coming with me today.
I've business past the walls,
a call beyond our gates
and I need someone sturdy,
a quick-footed companion.
My eyes aren't what they used to be
but yours are bright and sharp
my hearing has dulled with time
but yours is clear and keen
and with you beside me
I'll have safe travel.
Come, make up for my age
stay by me and walk at my side
in this fresh forest
on this bright day.
Tie up your long hair, my son-in-law
put up your golden coils
and wipe the surprise
off your handsome face.
Of the things I can say
about you, all this
is what I know for certain:
you can step through this dark wood
without being seen or heard
move with a scout's silence
without leaving any trace
and that, young man, is to your credit.
My daughters like the pretty ones
the handsome-faced men, you know
the smiling long-haired bright-eyed ones
and it's their luck, isn't it
that they can have
the pick of the lot
and whoever they please.
But there's no use in all that
not one bit of good
if she happens to love
a carefree river-rider
a free-hearted windsinger
a kind and foolish dreamer
who brings his wife trinkets
and in the end feeds the river.
Be glad for that, boy
that this isn't your fate
and that you know better.
Now, don't get me wrong
you're not who I'd have picked;
my Suvi deserves no less
than a man from a family
with the best reputation
from here to bright Luleå.
But she won't budge on this
and now I can say
maybe she has a clear head
after all.
I've looked into you
stared inside your heart
peered into your mind
and what I saw there
was quiet and comfort
all long golden grasses
and soft grain blowing.
You'll put down your roots
dig in firm and deep
to carve out a home
a bright place for you both
and I'm sure you'll do just fine.
That suits me well
and gladdens my heart
as long as you keep your wits
and your head on firm shoulders.
So put up your hair, son
come be my eyes and ears
and walk by my side
on this golden day.
