Signe hung up. Stared at her phone for a moment, as if glaring at it would fix the problem. As if all she had to do was give it a good hard look, and that would fix everything.
"Seems like everything's tied up right now, isn't it. Here, have a cup of tea."
Signe took the tea. Murmured a thank you. Tried to remember the name of the woman who had offered it. Michael's relatives all seemed to run together after a while.
She'd try again later. Again.

The rain fell, pattering on the slippery surface of her borrowed raincoat. Signe swore and shoved her phone back into her pocket.
Be patient she told herself. It's just because the mainland has shut down. It's busy over there. They need to keep the lines open for –

Her stomach turned.
Not wanting to think about it, she trudged to the barn instead, toward the dryness and warmth. None of her previous jobs had involved milking cows – but that was all right.
She was learning quickly.

"Your call cannot be connected, my ass," she muttered under her breath as she shoved it into her pocket.
"Mrrp," replied Magnus from his spot in her lap.
Across the room, Michael was lighting the fireplace. She could hear the others in the kitchen, talking quietly over the day. The news. The rumours. When would transport be open? Nobody knew.
She dipped her head, and pressed her face into the cat's fur, and refused to cry.
