When the air stills
Do you remember the rules?
Lalli nodded, looking up into those grey eyes, that lined face.
Follow silently. Do as you're told. Don't touch anything.
Come on, then. And don't put one toe out of line, boy.
His grandmother took up her rifle and went. Her feet made no sound, and neither did his. She'd taught him to walk like she did.
The forest swallowed them, rose up and wrapped them in its noise. Lalli listened to the birds, the sound of wings, their singing.
When the singing stopped and the forest fell to eerie stillness, he would be ready.
