First Light
There was something satisfying about the way the garden smelled in the morning, when the air was fresh and the sun was still low in the sky.
Greenery and crispness and damp earth, the sort of smell you could really sink your fingers into. Tomato vines and evergreen and the soft musk of carnations and geraniums.
Jouko pulled his hat down over his brow, drew on his gloves, and got to work.
There weren't many days when he could enjoy his garden like this. He liked the quiet of the morning. Little more than the wind brushing the treetops and the sound of early birdsong. It was better than gardening after work, with the sun overhead and the distracting noises of people passing by, of cars in the street, of his children playing their music too loudly.
He ignored the ache in his back, in his knees. It didn't matter. The beds in front of his house wouldn't water themselves. The vegetables were in need of tending. He wouldn't ask his children to help with it; the odds that they could be bothered to tell the difference between a weed and something he wanted to keep were not favourable.
Joona and Jonna could barely be trusted with the lawnmower, he thought with a frown as he yanked out a dandelion that had stubbornly taken root alongside his dahlias. And even that was stretching it.
Jouko sat back on his heels and brushed a bead of sweat from his brow.
Even if he could have relied on any of his children - if they ever took all of his instructions to heart - he knew he wouldn't have asked them for help. As much as he loved them, he loved this, too.
He would keep the early morning light for himself.
