Early Hours
Crisp air cool enough
to call for a jacket
throw it on and step outside
brightness on the horizon
weak glow at the sky's edge
waiting to pour over
just past three in the morning
too early to exist
but the bread won't bake itself
and there he stands
at the walkway's head
waiting in the morning's mist
don't ask why he comes
even though it's out of his way
he'll never give a straight answer
just take his good morning
thermos of full of coffee
and a smile that it's too early for.
